Bicep Workouts

Biceps

There are many different ways you can go about strengthening your Biceps. Just like working out any other muscle, you can either use free weights, machines, and even workouts at home without any equipment. Biceps are a smaller muscle group, so they are often worked when doing exercises that are intended for larger muscle groups, (Ex. Push-Ups, Pull-Ups, Etc.). Because of there being so many workouts that involve Biceps, I’m not going to go over all of them here, just the ones that focus most on Biceps.

Dumbbell Free Weights

Dumbbell Free Weights

Dumbbell Curl (Standard, Alternating, Seated, Standing)

Dumbbell Curls are your most basic version of Curls. Dumbbell Curls are completed by holding your Dumbbells palms up, and bringing them to your chest to complete a repetition.

Like stated above, these may be completed either by Alternating your arms, or Curling both at the same time. It’s also up to you if you complete the reps while standing or sitting.

Concentration Curl

Concentration Curls are similar to standard Dumbbell curls, only difference is that at the end of your repetitions you twist your wrist and Dumbbell inward and squeeze your Bicep. This Curl is great to add some variety to your Bicep workout routine, especially when you have hit a plateau.

Hammer Curl (Standard, Alternating)

In order to perform a Hammer Curl you grab the Dumbbells sideways with your thumbs facing up. Hammer Curls can be done by Curling both arms at the same time or alternating, (I prefer alternating). This type of Curl focuses on different areas of your Bicep than other variations.

Preacher Curl (Dumbbell, Barbell)

Preacher Curls are performed on something called a Preacher Bench. You use a Preacher Bench by placing the upper part of your arms on the padding and perform repetitions by Curling either a Barbell or Dumbbells until they reach near your face.

Barbell Curl (Close Grip, Wide Grip)

Using a Barbell for Curls is another good idea when trying to switch up your routines a little to avoid a plateau. Another good reason to use a Barbell to perform Curls is to evenly distribute the weight to both your left and right Biceps.

It’s your choice to use either Close or Wide grip when performing Barbell Curls, Each one will work a different area.

Cable Curl (High, Low, One Arm, Two Arm)

Cable Curls are a great way to strengthen your Biceps, Cables use tension instead of just weight like using Dumbbells or Barbells do. Like I listed, It’s your choice to use a single, or both arms when performing the Curls. Another option is to place the pulleys either above or below you.

Chest (Pectoral) Workouts

Chest (Pectoral)

There are A LOT of different chest exercises out there, and they can be done either at home, with free weights, or with machines. Ever wonder which workouts will give you the best results? Or have you ever wondered what the differences are? Well your chest is one of your body’s larger muscles, so some workouts may work the upper region, some might work your inner pecs, and so on. For anyone who is new to weight lifting, or for anyone who is just looking for a way to increase their results, this is for you. I’m going to list some different exercises that will strengthen your chest, and explain exactly which area of your pectorals they are affecting.

Barbell Free Weights

Barbell Free Weights

Barbell Bench Press (Flat, Incline, Decline, Close-Grip, Wide-Grip)

Barbell Bench Press gives you a good even chest workout because the weight on the barbell is distributed on both of your arms evenly as long as you have your hands positioned correctly and evenly on the barbell. There are many different ways to Barbell Bench Press like stated I stated above.

Flat Barbell Bench Press will work your chest as a whole. Decline Bench Press puts more strain on your lower pecs. Incline puts more strain on your upper pecs and your shoulders. Close-Grip Barbell Bench Press will put more strain on your triceps, and Wide-Grip Barbell Bench Press will put more strain on your shoulders and outer chest. As you can see, these various types of Barbell Bench Press are all equally good in their own ways, it just depends on what muscles you’re trying to focus on most.

Dumbbell Bench Press (Flat, Incline, Decline, Flyes)

Dumbbell Bench Press will force you to focus on your muscles more to help control to motion of the free weights. Because of this, using Dumbbells could prove to be more effective than using a Barbell. Like using a Barbell, there are various ways to Bench Press while using Dumbbells, I wont go over them because the variations are basically the same as using a Barbell.

A difference between Barbell and Dumbbell Press is with Dumbbells you can “squeeze” at the end of your repetitions. You’re also able to get a greater range of motion when using Dumbbells. A word of caution, you may want to be more careful when Benching with Dumbbells because it can be easy to lose control of one or both of the weights, so it’s important to have a spotter when doing heavy lifts.

Push-ups (Close Hand, wide Hand, Standard)

Push-Ups are a very basic but very effective way to strengthen and tone your Chest. Not only do Push-Ups work your chest, but they also will work muscles like your Shoulders, Biceps, Triceps, Lats, and so on. The small variations of Push-Ups can make a big difference. This means that you may be able to do forty or fifty Standard Push-Ups, but only fifteen or twenty Close Hand Push-Ups. The reason for this is because when you use a Close Hand position, it will focus a lot of the strain on your Triceps.

There are many more not-so-common variations than what I listed above, (Dive-Bomb, Elevated Legs, Etc.) that will focus more on different muscles, and give a wider range of motion in order to work larger portions of your muscles.

Dips (Chest Version)

There are two different versions of Dips, Chest and Triceps. The Chest version is a very good way to strengthen your pecs. The way you do the Chest version is by slightly bending your torso forward and by focusing and squeezing your chest while you’re completing your reps.

Cable (Flyes, Crossover)

Using Cables is also a great way to workout your Chest muscles. They give you a wide range of motion and use more tension than Dumbbells or Barbells.

There are a couple variations you can use with Cables as well including Flyes and Crossovers. To execute Cable Crossovers, you want to raise both pulleys above your head, grab both cables while standing, step forward, and keeping your arms slightly bent, pull both cables until your hands meet together in front of you.

Cable Flyes are slightly different. You position a bench between the two cable pulleys and position the pulleys at their lowest. You can make your Bench Flat, Incline, or Decline for this exercise. You just keep your arms the same way I explained for the Cable Crossovers, and pull the cables until your hands meet together in front of you.

Creatine Supplements

Creatine

Ever wish you could just push out an extra one or two reps on the bench? Or have you wished your muscles wouldn’t get so tired so fast at the gym? The answer is Creatine. Creatine is a pre-workout supplement designed to reduce fatigue and promote recovery. Creatine also helps your muscles retain water which will increase your muscle size. A lot of products now combine Creatine with other supplements such as: Nitric Oxide, Protein, etc. But you are still able to find good ol pure Creatine if you decide to.

BSN N.O. Xplode

N.O. Xplode (Contains Creatine)

Creatine Ethyl Ester (CEE)

The difference between normal Creatine and Creatine Ethyl Ester is that Creatine Ethyl Ester is attached to something called an “Ester” which is supposed to help absorption into your muscles. It is also said that CEE stays in your body longer than other Creatine. Although, some may argue against this.

Creatine Monohydrate (CM)

Creatine Monohydrate is the most popular type of Creatine today. This is the basic type of Creatine that your body makes small amounts of on it own, and that you can find small amounts in some foods like red meats.

Magnesium Chelate

Creatine Magnesium Chelate claims that is also helps absorption into your muscles, and that it may help stomach discomfort for those who have those issues with other types of Creatines.

Micronized Creatine

Micronized Creatine is yet another type of Creatine that is supposed to be easily absorbed into your muscles. The difference with this type is that the Monohydrate particles are far smaller than your average Creatine Monohydrate. This type of Creatine is also supposed to lessen stomach discomfort.

Effervescent Creatine

Effervescent Creatine is also said to be absorbed easily into your muscles, but in the case, the reason is because Effervescent Creatine breaks down in your liquids (Ex. Water). Another benefit of using this form of Creatine is that it’s said to reduce stomach discomfort.
